Absences

At Glenmore State High School, we expect students to attend school every day.

These expectations are guided and enforced by the Queensland Government's Managing student absences and enforcing enrolment and attendance at state schools procedure.

We strongly believe children need to attend school every day to receive the most from their education.

Research shows that students who have a good attendance record are more likely to achieve high results, and build social and emotional skills such as communication, teamwork and resilience.

Reporting an absence

From time to time students may be absent from school with a reasonable excuse.

Any absence of a student is to be reported by a parent/carer with the reason for the absence before or on the day of the absence, or as soon as practicable.

Parents/carers are notified via SMS daily of any unexplained absence of a student.

Our SMSs can be replied to with the reason for the absence.

Or you can notify us of the absence and the reason via email, absences@glenmoreshs.eq.edu.au.

A student with a planned absence of 10 or more days is required to apply for an exemption to the Principal. Once completed, please return application form via email to absences@glenmoreshs.eq.edu.au or drop form to the school administration.

Going shopping or fishing, visiting family and friends, celebrating birthdays, staying up late, being tired or extended school holidays are not reasonable excuses to be absent from school.

Every day counts

School absenteeism and truancy can impact significantly on your student's learning and wellbeing.

Every day counts is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community to improve students' attendance at school.

To do this, Every day counts promotes four key messages:

  • All children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day.
  • Schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance.
  • Truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices.
  • Attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.

Struggling or refusing to attend school

It might be something you’ve never noticed, or something you’ve seen for years.

When your child is struggling at school or refusing to go to school, knowing you are on their side is what matters most.

Every child has something to offer and deserves success, whatever that looks like for them.

Keep believing in your child and work with them to find something that brings them joy – an activity or interest they want to spend time on.

When your child does something they enjoy and can learn to do it well, it helps build their confidence.

Over time, and with the right support, you can grow that spark inside your child.

As your child’s confidence grows, and with your help, they will feel ready to get their learning back on track so they can get the most out of going to school.

But you don't have to do this alone.

Visit the Spark their future website for resources, strategies, and additional support.

And contact us to discuss how we can work with you for the benefit of your student.
