A school Guidance Officer (GO) supports families and students by providing advice and counselling on educational, behavioural, vocational, personal, social, family, and mental health and wellbeing issues. Additional to this, GO’s provide case management services in responding to students with complex and challenging circumstances, including student protection matters, critical incidents, mental health issues, and suicide prevention and postvention support.

To further support parents/carers, Guidance Officers undertake Psychoeducational assessments providing understanding of student’s learning difficulties, and help the school to achieve the best educational outcomes for their student.

Specifically, at Glenmore State High School our Guidance Officer coordinates the student support and wellbeing program this is responsive to the needs of the whole school community. This program is currently run by our Student Wellbeing and Engagement Leaders (SWELs) for each year level in Student Wellbeing At Glenmore (SWAG) classes each Wednesday afternoon.

Sonia De Villiers is our current Guidance Officer at Glenmore SHS. Having worked at Glenmore as the GO for over 10 years, and as a Humanities and English teacher for over 25 years prior to this, Sonia enjoys supporting young people to overcome personal challenges, and build their social and emotional resources.
